Henry Hudson

Explorer Gazette

June 1611

Henry Hudson was an explorer in 1609.The Dutch wanted Hudson to lead a crew of 20 on a search for the Northwest Passage (a passage that leads to the Indies). As Hudson went north the weather grew colder, and then finally Hudson turned around to quit. In 1610 Hudson was hired by England on a search for the Northwest Passage. Hudson sailed north on a
ship called “Discovery”. Hudson was sure he had found the Northwest Passage when he discovered a 450-mile-long passageway. The passageway, soon to be called the Hudson Strait, lead into a large bay. As winter set the bay froze over and the Discovery froze as well. Hudson and his crew spent a long hard winter in a small log hut. June of 1611,when the weather warmed up,Hudson set sail again. The angry crew thought Hudson was turning around to go home to England, but they soon realized that he was sailing west again. The angry crew ,wanting despratly to go home, put Hudson his son and 7 other loyal crew members in a small raft and they were never heard from again. I honestly think that they all died of starvation and decomposers tore them apart and the small raft sunk
